Opened by MP Sarah Wollaston earlier this year, the Visitor Centre is the first of its kind for the RNLI and will inspire and engage current and future RNLI supporters for many years to come.

The centre is a significant leap forward for the charity and will enable them to showcase the brave and courageous work of their lifesavers to the local public, volunteers and their families.

The intention is to inform visitors about the various arms of the charity; lifeboats, lifeguards, flood relief and education as well as upcoming information on the RNLI’s Community Lifesaving Plan which aims to cut the current 160 coastal deaths in the UK in half by 2024.

MP Sarah Wollaston received a tour of the Visitor’s Centre before meeting the volunteers and talking to the ‘Little Crew’; which comprised of the children of the lifeboat crew, who watched the proceedings from within the Dart D class inshore lifeboat.

Speaking about the event, Chairman of the RNLI Dart Lifeboat Management Group, Jake Moores, said: “From small acorns great oak tress grow. The opening of the centre has become a great result for the town and for the RNLI, and myself and the volunteers are looking forwards to many years of service, both at the centre and at the lifeboat station.”

The RNLI Dart is Appeal’s nominated charity for 2016. The charity was chosen due to The Chairman of the Appeal Group, Michael Madigan’s strong associations with the area, and as a keen boatsman he is very aware of the importance of staying safe on the water. Over the course of the year money will be raised through brochure donations as we match every single customer brochure request with a donation to the charity.
