Lantern roofs are becoming a common sight in homes across the UK. Their popularity has increased in the last few years, and they’re an ideal addition to modern extensions. They allow more light into the home and look stylish, so more homeowners are investing in new roof lanterns.

Like other types of windows, roof lanterns need a shading option. Here at Appeal, we’ve worked hard to create the ideal blinds for roof lanterns. Creating blinds for overhead glazing is a unique challenge, but we’ve cracked it. We’re incredibly proud of them and think they perfectly complement these striking architectural installations. Read on to discover more about the benefits of roof lantern blinds.

The Beginner’s Guide To Roof Lanterns

Before we go any further, we should explain what roof lanterns are, as not everyone will be familiar with the term. A roof lantern is a glass structure that resembles a pyramid and lets extra sunlight into the house. They’re not suitable for slanted roofs but are perfect for flat ones, so they’re often used in extensions. You may have heard them referred to as ‘skylights’ as well, but strictly speaking, they’re not the same thing. Skylights are flat and more closely resemble regular windows. You can read more about skylight blinds in our recent attic extensions article

In recent years, traditional conservatories have fallen out of fashion, and homeowners have become more interested in alternatives like solid roof extensions. However, they’re still keen to get as much sunlight as possible, so roof lanterns are a natural choice. A tiled roof extension with a lantern can be just as bright and welcoming as a regular glass conservatory but has better thermal efficiency, and regulating the temperature is much easier.

Reducing Glare And Improving Thermal Efficiency

Roof lanterns let light in from multiple angles and inevitably, there are going to be times when you want to reduce the glare. That’s where lantern roof blinds come in. Because lanterns have an unconventional shape, fitting curtains to them is impossible. Blinds are the perfect alternative. They’re far more flexible and can be adapted more easily.

They can transform lantern roofs from transparent to opaque at the touch of a button. If it’s a gloriously sunny day, you’ll still be able to relax and browse your tablet or read a paperback without being dazzled by the extra light.

As an added bonus, lantern roof blinds also improve the energy efficiency of your extension. They function like an extra glass pane and help trap heat. This will be good news for anyone that’s fed up with their extension becoming an oven in the summer and a freezer during the winter; lantern roof blinds can make it usable all year round. Ours come fitted with ULTRA® Smart technology and can be operated through a discreet wall-mounted switch or remote control. They can even be pre-programmed to activate during certain light conditions or at specific times, so you’ll never have to worry about a stuffy room again.
