Window blinds don’t exist in isolation. Wherever they’re fitted, they’re part of the overall decor of a room and contribute to the aesthetic. That’s why choosing the right colour for your blinds is important; you won’t want anything that clashes with the wallpaper or furnishings and spoils the ambience.

Here at Appeal Home Shading, we’ve helped hundreds of people design their perfect window blinds. We’ve picked up more than our fair share of insights in that time and today, we’d like to address one very specific question; should your blinds be lighter or darker than the walls? Frankly, you can go with either and the decision will depend on your personal preferences, but let’s take a closer look at both.

Lighter Coloured Blinds

Before we get started though, let’s make one thing clear; picking window blinds that are the exact colour as the surrounding walls isn’t a good idea. It may give the room a uniform look, but it’ll also blur the line between the furnishings and make things seem rather bland. Granted, this is a matter of taste and some people like a single colour, but from our perspective, it’s always best to go at least one shade darker or lighter.

Lighter coloured blinds are the ones to pick when you want a room to feel brighter and bigger. Lighter window blinds contrast beautifully with dark walls and floors and subtly draw the eye without distracting from the rest of the room. If you’ve noticed that your lounge or bedroom seems overly compact or even a little claustrophobic, putting up white or light blue blinds can do wonders.

Darker Window Blinds

If lighter blinds make a room seem larger, can you guess what darker ones do? That’s right, they bring a degree of closeness and intimacy. Choose darker window blinds if you want an airy but relaxed vibe for when you next host a sophisticated social gathering or simply need a better night’s sleep.

Darker shaded window blinds have more visual impact too. You may notice that your eyes linger on them for longer and they leave a bigger impression. Darker shaded blinds aren’t as subtle as lighter ones, but they are ideal for making guests feel warm and welcome when they step over the threshold.

In other words, when asking if your blinds should be lighter or darker than their surroundings, there isn’t really a wrong answer. It depends on the mood you want to create and if you’re looking for the perfect window blinds, you’ve come to the right place.
