How To Install Window Blinds

What’s the best way to install window blinds? Hire a professional. Here at Appeal, we’ve got decades of experience fitting window blinds, and some of our staff have got so good at it we’re convinced they could do the job blindfolded. However, we’ve also been called out to many cases where a plucky homeowner has tried to put their blinds up themselves, only to create a big mess and need help. 

That’s why we always recommend getting an expert to put your blinds up, but there will always be someone who tries to do it themselves. To be fair, we love a good DIY project, so if you’re determined to give it a go, here’s a short guide on how to install blinds. 

For clarity, this guide was written with roller blinds in mind.

Step One: Read The Instructions

This should be an obvious step, but it’s amazing how many people neglect the instructions in favour of a Youtube video. There is a benefit to online videos, and visual demonstrations of putting up blinds can be very helpful, but they’re no substitute for the actual instructions. Youtube videos are made to attract clicks and tend to be quite broad, so they’re less likely to be geared towards your specific blinds. 

And whatever you do, don’t assume you can figure out how to install your new blinds using your intuition. Throwing the instructions aside and ploughing on regardless is a good way to end up with broken window blinds and a carpet covered in plaster. 

Step Two: Fitting The Bracket

The first practical step is fitting the bracket. Measure the space for your blinds to ensure there are no discrepancies and that the blinds will fit. Use a pencil to mark the position on the wall and drill holes in the plaster. Then put the bracket in place, using Rawlplugs and appropriate fittings to hold it up. Lastly, check it’s secure and tighten any loose screws with a screwdriver.

Step Three: Putting Up A Window Blind

Next, it’s time to attach the blind. You can simply slot them into place if they’re already prepared, but if not, grab your measuring tape again. Measure the distance between the brackets and subtract 32mm for the mechanism (37mm if cordless). 

Then, carefully use a hacksaw to bring the bottom bar to the correct size and trim the fabric with a craft knife (or a sharp pair of scissors). Once it’s a suitable size, roll it up and slide the bottom bar back into the fabric. If you’re putting manual blinds, place the pull chain on the chosen side and finish off by sliding them into the bracket, pivot-end first.
