At Appeal Shading, our window blinds don’t just provide privacy and control over natural light, they also contribute to the overall aesthetic of your living space. However, over time, they can accumulate dust, dirt, and grime, which detracts from their beauty and functionality. In this guide, we’ll show you how to keep your blinds looking their best. Make cleaning them a part of your regular household routine and you’ll notice they last longer, look great and enhance your home.

Best Methods For Cleaning Window Blinds

First, we need to state something; not all window blinds are the same. There are multiple types available and the same techniques won’t work for all of them. For example, pleated conservatory blinds might not withstand the same degree of rigorous scrubbing as a set of old-fashioned plastic blinds, and you should certainly keep wet cloths away from the battery packs of electric blinds. As a general overview though, all these methods should work:

Dust Regularly

Using a microfiber cloth or a duster on your blinds two or three times a month can make a noticeable difference. Just remember to do both sides; it’s only too easy to wipe the dust off one side and forget that there’s another. Additionally, consider damping the cloth slightly. This will stop the dust particles from settling somewhere else in the same room.

Vacuuming

A vacuum cleaner switched to a low setting is a great way to clean your window blinds, especially if they’re made of fabric. It removes any dirt or dust caught in the material and gives it a deeper clean than dusting. You could also use a vacuum cleaner on wood or plastic blinds if you’re in a hurry, but you’ll achieve better results with a damp microfiber cloth.

Spot Cleaning

Addressing stains promptly will prevent them from setting in. Use a damp cloth and fabric cleaner and gently blot the affected area. If necessary, repeat this a second time after 30 minutes. This should help remove smaller stains and return blinds to their former beauty.

For blinds that require more thorough cleaning due to heavy dirt accumulation, it’s best to take a different approach.

Professional Cleaning

Of course, if you’re worried about damaging your blinds, or there’s a stubborn stain that refuses to budge, you can always hire a professional cleaning service. This might be the more expensive option, but it’s also the easiest. We all live hectic lives and if you can’t always fit cleaning your blinds into your schedule, there’s nothing wrong with hiring outside help.

When Do I Need New Blinds?

Regular cleaning and maintenance will extend the lifespan of your blinds, and at Appeal Home Shading, we build them to last. But if you’ve got older blinds, it’s worth keeping your eyes open for the following warning signs:

  • Damage: If your blinds have broken slats or mechanisms that no longer work, then it might be time to seek a replacement.
  • Discolouration: Window blinds that are heavily discoloured or have faded can make rooms feel less vibrant and windows appear smaller.
  • Outdated: If your blinds no longer match your interior design scheme and clash with the decor, consider updating them. We’ve all got a few home furnishings that we’ve inherited from older relatives, so if your blinds aren’t as hip as they were in the eighties, it might be time for an upgrade.
