Gable windows are an increasingly popular choice for homeowners looking to capitalise on the excellent views outside of their homes. With such a large and unique shape, challenges often surface when it comes to shading. However, here at Appeal Home Shading, we’re experts when it comes to controlling the light in your home. We’ve done the research and have compared the curtain, the shutter and the blind for the Gable window.

The Case for Curtains

Curtains are one of the oldest forms of home shading. Most of us likely grew up in buildings that predominantly featured curtains over other forms of shading due to the ease of installation that comes with curtains. Curtains hang from a rod placed above the window and can be dragged across to keep out the light. Curtains are generally a popular choice because of how easy it is to match them to your home’s decor. Finding a piece of fabric that matches the room they’re in is relatively simple, and you can have them installed quickly and easily.

Unfortunately, even though they are one of the most common ways of keeping the light out of your home, they are one of the most inefficient. Curtains are not fitted specifically to the window in the same way that shutters and blinds are. As a result, even curtains that claim to be a blackout often let much light in when left to their own devices. Homeowners often creatively tuck their curtains in behind something to alleviate this. Still, we don’t believe that is counted in the curtain’s favour here at Appeal Home Shading. Furthermore, due to this separation from the window itself, curtains are by far the worst of the three when it comes to heat absorption and heat efficiency. Heat escapes easily through the gaps that come with curtains in the winter and enter easily through the gaps in the summer.

When it comes to Gable Windows, their unique shape and size make curtains a poor choice for shading. The issues that curtains have are only more prevalent with a Gable window, and we, therefore, would write them off as an option.

The Case for Shutters

Shaped gable window shutters

Shutters are a stylish and unique form of home shading that we offer here at Appeal Home Shading. Our timber shutters are bespoke in design and come in various shapes, sizes, colours and styles. We pride ourselves on offering decorative window shutters appropriate for any room and any window. Therefore, our timber shutters are an excellent choice when it comes to Gable windows. Compared to blinds and curtains, shutters are the most overtly decorative option. There is nothing quite like the sun coming through the louvres and casting a cinematic shadow on the wall. Furthermore, the decorative nature of shutters ensures that your Gable windows complement the room with a unique style designed specifically for the decor.

As a result, decorative window shutters are an excellent option for your gable windows. Their quirky style is matched only by their classical sophistication.
