For many people, blackout blinds are essential. As their name suggests, they’re designed to block the sunlight and keep a room in darkness. If you work a night shift and have trouble sleeping during the daytime, they can make it easier to drift off and get much-needed rest.

We’ve been designing and installing blackout blinds at Appeal Home Shading for years, and one of the most common questions we get asked is if blackout blinds make a room warmer. Our customers want a good night’s sleep, but they’re wary about turning their bedrooms into ovens.

Happily, we can dispel your worries right now. Blackout blinds will not make your room unbearably hot, regardless of how warm the outside world might be. They’ll actually do the opposite and make regulating the temperature much easier.

Thermal Benefits Of Blackout Blinds

Blackout blinds are specifically designed to reflect the sun’s rays. This is primarily to stop your rooms from getting too bright, but it also has the side effect of managing the temperature. They reflect heat and light simultaneously, making it far easier to keep your room cool. We’ve had some blisteringly hot summers in the past few years, and blackout blinds can be a huge benefit when the days start getting longer.

They’re useful in winter too. They form an extra barrier over your windows and help trap heat indoors. Blackout screens for windows are superb insulators, so you won’t need to keep your central heating on excessively high to make your house comfortable. If you have blackout blinds installed, you won’t wake up in a freezing room on a bitter January morning. The only downside is it can make getting out of bed less enticing, and you might be late for work! If you live in a particularly cold area, you can improve your energy efficiency even further with our bespoke Honeycomb blackout blinds. These are some of our best energy-saving blinds and they’re great at keeping things cosy.

Alternatives

Our blackout blinds are available in many styles. We offer motorised blackout blinds that are programmed to work on a timer or remote-controlled blackout blinds for that modern touch. We must stress though, that they are intended mainly for blocking light. There may be scenarios where other types of blinds are more suitable.

For example, if you manage an office and want to reduce screen glare, blackout blinds are not the best choice. They’ll certainly stop the sun’s rays from interfering with your computer monitors, but they’ll also make your workspace disproportionately dark. Similarly, putting them up in a dining room to improve thermal efficiency would also be a mistake; eating your meals in the dark is not a good idea.

In those cases, alternatives like our cafe style blinds may be a better choice. They’ll still allow you to manage light and heat levels but won’t shut the sun out as completely as blackout blinds do.

Blackout blinds should be your first port of call if you’re looking for a good night’s sleep. They can also encourage young children to fall into a more regular sleep routine, or if you just want to get a good lie in at the weekend.
