This year, the UK summer has been a very wet and overcast one, but it looks like things are finally starting to improve. Throughout July, we couldn’t leave the Appeal Home Shading offices without raincoats and umbrellas, but in the last week, the sun has come out. The days are brighter and warmer and it at last feels more like summer. This however brings another challenge; how to keep cool.

If you’ve followed developments in the home shading industry, it won’t be any surprise to learn that window blinds can help. We’ve talked about this subject before, but it’s worth repeating; blinds are the unsung heroes of keeping the world cool.

Window Blinds And Climate Change

This is important because despite the severe rain, the UK is the exception, not the rule. The rest of Europe has experienced intense heat waves and scientists have warned that these are going to become more frequent. Europe is warming faster than expected and this can have major consequences.

Just recently, the British Blind And Shutter Association responded to the Government’s Environmental Audit Committee inquiry into heat resilience and sustainable cooling. The reliance on energy-intensive devices like air conditioning is causing concern, and they wanted to know about more efficient alternatives. Shading systems like window blinds were the natural answer. They can reduce overheating and energy consumption and prevent overloading the electricity grid during peak demand. The BBSA has a wealth of information on this subject and it’s well worth looking into.

Keeping Cool In Hot Temperatures

This is a topic that’s been in the news a lot these past few years. You can find guides on keeping cool on Sky News, The MET Office, and the UK Government Website among many others. They include tips like putting your pyjamas in the freezer and using the thinnest sheets on your bed, and installing window blinds regularly shows up as an idea.

At Appeal, we’ve been talking about using window blinds to cool homes for a while and it’s always gratifying to see the message repeated elsewhere. Air conditioning units are great in the short term, but they help to perpetuate the problem in the long term. The strain they put on the power grid accelerates climate change, whereas window blinds are far more environmentally friendly.
